How to do a TRUE “Self Care Session”
When is the last time you scheduled one?!
Never?!? You’re not alone!
For so many women, “self care” has become just another thing to squeeze into an already overflowing schedule. We light a candle, scroll Instagram for 20 minutes, maybe grab a coffee… and somehow still end the day exhausted, overstimulated, and emotionally drained.
Here’s the truth:
If your self care leaves you feeling depleted, distracted, or like you need another break afterward… it probably wasn’t true self care.
Real self care should leave you feeling:
Recharged
More grounded
Clear-headed
Calm in your nervous system
Connected to yourself again
Not just temporarily entertained.
At The Well, we believe self care is less about escaping your life and more about restoring yourself so you can fully live it.
What a TRUE Self Care Session Actually Looks Like
A true self care session is intentional.
It’s creating space to nourish your:
Mind
Body
Emotions
Spirit
Nervous system
Not all at once perfectly — but enough to actually feel different afterward.
And no… it does not have to be expensive, complicated, or take all day.
Sometimes 60 intentional minutes can change your entire week.
The DO’s of REAL Self Care
DO: Put it on the calendar
If it only happens “when you have time,” it probably won’t happen.
Schedule it the same way you would:
a doctor appointment
a meeting
your child’s event
a workout class
You deserve a reserved space too.
Even starting with:
1 hour every other week
a Sunday reset
a monthly solo morning
can completely shift your emotional health.
DO: Remove stimulation
Many women think they are relaxing… while simultaneously:
scrolling
texting
checking emails
listening to five opinions online
multitasking
That is not rest for your nervous system.
True self care often requires LESS input.
Try:
silence
worship music
nature
journaling
reading something uplifting
prayer
breath work
a slow walk without your phone
Your brain needs room to breathe.
DO: Ask yourself what you ACTUALLY need
Not what sounds trendy.
Sometimes self care is:
a nap
saying no
drinking water
going to bed early
crying
sitting in the sun
lifting weights
meal prepping so future-you feels supported
finally making the appointment you’ve avoided
Sometimes the most healing thing isn’t glamorous at all.
DO: Include something restorative for your body
Your body keeps score of stress.
Try adding:
stretching
sauna
red light therapy
a bath with magnesium salts
essential oils like doTERRA’s Serenity, Balance or Adaptiv (Kari’s #1)
grounding barefoot outside
a high protein nourishing meal
hydration with minerals
gentle movement
The goal is not punishment or productivity.
The goal is restoration.
DO: Protect your peace afterward
One of the biggest mistakes women make?
Immediately jumping back into chaos.
If possible:
don’t rush right back to errands
don’t immediately absorb everyone else’s needs
don’t undo your calm with overstimulation
Protect the reset you just created.
The DON’Ts of Self Care
DON’T: Confuse distraction with restoration
Binge watching TV for 6 hours while stress-eating and scrolling may numb you temporarily…
…but it usually doesn’t restore you.
Ask yourself:
“Do I feel more alive afterward… or more depleted?”
That question changes everything.
DON’T: Make self care another performance
You do not need:
the perfect aesthetic
a luxury spa
expensive routines
a Pinterest-worthy morning
Self care is not a performance.
It’s permission.
Permission to become human again.
DON’T: Fill every second
Women often struggle with stillness because we’re conditioned to stay productive.
But healing often happens in the pause.
Not every moment needs:
noise
productivity
accomplishment
consumption
Sometimes your nervous system simply needs quiet.
DON’T: Ignore your emotional exhaustion
You can eat healthy, exercise, take supplements, and still feel completely drained emotionally.
True wellness includes:
boundaries
emotional honesty
grief processing
rest
spiritual connection
healthy relationships
You cannot hustle your way into peace.
A Simple TRUE Self Care Session Idea
Here’s an example of what a 2-hour intentional reset could look like:
1. Disconnect
Put your phone on Do Not Disturb.
2. Regulate your nervous system
Walk outside, stretch, breathe deeply, pray, or journal.
3. Nourish your body
Eat a healthy meal with protein, fiber, and hydration.
4. Create calm
Use essential oils, calming music, a bath, sauna, or red light therapy.
5. Reflect
Ask yourself:
What do I need more of?
What is draining me?
What would support me this week?
6. Re-enter your life slower
Not rushed.
Not frantic.
Grounded.
Final Thoughts
You were never meant to run on empty constantly.
And self care isn’t selfish.
It’s stewardship.
When women truly care for themselves — physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually — everyone around them benefits too.
So here’s your reminder from The Well:
Schedule the session.
Not someday.
Not “when life calms down.”
Now.
Because the healthiest version of you is not the busiest version of you.
It’s the version that feels whole again.
