WHAT THE HECK IS NUTRIGENOMICS?

Nutrigenomics can get science-geeky real fast, but I want to try to explain the importance of it and why we emphasize healthy lifestyle.

In short, it is the science of nutrition and how diet affects a person’s health based on their DNA and genomic response.

This area of  study emerged from the Human Genome Project in the early 2000’s which identified the differences in genetics or your DNA; the microbiome (mainly in your gut) and sometimes called the second genome because of the diversity of fungal and bacterial cells; and the impact of genomics and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), the building blocks of DNA, which can create a completely different effect on different people ~ there are over 10 million variants!  And then there’s the variation in epigenetics, the lifestyle impact on genomics...

A number of studies have shown correlations, and while there are still a lot of unknowns, nutrition therapy is emerging as a possible protocol in the treatment of disease, such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, Alzheimer’s, cancer and more.  It may be possible to eradicate these diseases with what you eat ~ can you imagine?!  A roadblock to some doctors is the holistic, not pharmaceutical, approach to better health.  However, that can also tie into pharmacogenomics, which analyzes how prescription or other medication interacts with a person’s DNA.  It can help determine the most effective active substances or potential adverse side effects.  But there are ethical and psychosocial challenges in managing and accepting the data involved.

My recommendation, be your OWN health detective!  And practice a healthy lifestyle to optimize your epigenetic potential.  Since a large part of that is maintaining your internal organ health, some doTERRA Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG®) essential oils that are particularly relevant are:

  • DigestZen - a blend of Peppermint, Coriander, Ginger, Caraway, Cardamom, Fennel, and Anise essential oils to soothe your stomach.

    • Add a few drops to water to take internally.

    • Rub on the stomach before flying or taking a road trip as part of a massage.

    • Take DigestZen internally when traveling or trying new foods to soothe occasional stomach upset.

    • Add to water or tea to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract.

    • Diffuse for a sweet, minty calming aroma.

  • Slim & Sassy - a blend of Grapefruit Peel, Lemon Peel, Peppermint Plant, Ginger Root, and Cinnamon Bark essential oils to aid in appetite control.

  • Add to water or tea and drink before working out for a revitalizing energy boost.

  • Consume before meals to help control appetite and overeating.

  • Take internally as a part of a healthy weight management program.

  • Add a few drops to a Slim & Sassy TrimShake or V Shake.

  • Zendocrine - a blend of Tangerine Peel, Rosemary Leaf, Geranium Flower/Leaf, Juniper Berry, Cilantro Herb essential oils to aid in metabolic processes.

  • Add 1–2 drops to citrus drinks, teas, or water to support healthy liver function.

  • Take one drop daily for one week as part of an internal cleansing regimen or to kick-start a New Year’s resolution.

  • Apply to abdomen or bottoms of feet to support the body's natural detoxification system.

All three of these also come in softgels for convenience of use.  Our bodies are amazing at recognizing natural solutions in healing and want to be in a state of homeostatis (balanced).  Comprised of trillions of cells that can work together to keep you in that state, why not provide it the tools to do so?  We are blessed to live in a free country where you can make that choice.
