Proactive vs Reactive

On episode 188 of The Well Podcast, Kari welcomes her new friend from Australia and fellow essential oil user, Elyse Rooney, host of The Wholesome Mumma Podcast.

Elyse shares how she spent years wrestling with symptoms of endometriosis, and lived a reactive life treating symptoms. Now, as a mom of three, she’s flipping the script and focusing on living a proactive life, not just as a mom, but within the home and her heart.

When we’re reactive, we’re waiting for things to go wrong. But when we’re proactive, we can put things in place to prevent life from going wrong.

Kari: What are the 3 areas you focus on first when you’re looking to be proactive?

Elyse: The areas I focus on are

  1. Health &Wellness

  2. Our Home

  3. Our Faith

Kari: What are your top tips to be proactive within your home?

Elyse: I would say the first is to declutter. This doesn’t mean become a full blown minimalist, there is a difference between having stuff and having things you enjoy. Get rid of the stuff you have “just because” and making sure everything in your home has a place. The next biggest thing is to create rhythms in your home. Look at the biggest struggle and create a rhythm with habits that make routines flow more smoothly. Elyse shares some helpful examples on the podcast!

Kari: What are some proactive wellness tips?

Elyse: Invest in pure, therapeutic grade essential oils. Look at what ingredients are in your home products and detox your toxic load. Start with fragrance. Then focus maybe on food, and switch to less packaged and processed foods with a focus on more natural and fresh foods. Then focus on dealing with the root cause instead of dealing with symptoms.

Kari: So our faith might be “first” as most important, but I like saving it for last as our dessert. So what are some ways to be proactive with our faith?

Elyse: It seems so simple, but read your Bible. Being proactive means knowing God’s word in our heart so when something happens, it’s in our hearts and minds so we know how to respond.
